i know where i'm going!

In 1944 at the height of the second world war, this iconic film - also known as IKWIG by diehard fans - was filmed on the Isle of Mull.  Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger rank among the greatest film-making teams of the 20th century and filmed much of it on location as well as at Denham Studios in Buckinghamshire.  Many things have contributed to its longevity as a classic:  the innovative special effects;  the emotional intensity of the leading players and the wonderful way it captures the spirit of the island and its inhabitants.

It also has an innovative storyline which has been praised very highly.  In 1947 Emeric Pressburger met the head of the script department at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.  He was told they used i know where i'm going! as an example of the perfect screenplay and used it with writers stuck for insipiration or who needed a lesson in script writing.

The film premiered in 1945, and to mark the 65th anniversary we are hosting a celebratory weekend in October.

Join us at the Western Isles Hotel on Friday 15th October for a weekend of IKWIG excursions, entertainment and discussions....there’ll even be a showing of the film.

The weekend is being led by Robert Beveridge, Lecturer in Media Policy at Edinburgh Napier University and visiting professor at Sassari, Sardinia. Most importantly, he’s a big fan of the film.

The weekend is a perfect opportunity to meet fellow fans of the film, and enjoy some of the fabulous locations involved in its making, so contact us now to reserve your place or to find out more.

The proposed itinerary is:

Friday 15th October:

Arrive at the Western Isles and enjoy complementary afternoon tea and scones in the conservatory.

7.00 pm 'Gin and Dubonnet' in the lounge before enjoying a 3 course table d’hôte menu in the dining room

9.30 pm  A presentation of 'i know where i’m going!' in the Lounge

Saturday 16th October:

After breakfast either enjoy the sights of Tobermory and Mull, or join Robert and friends and take the optional trip to the Corryvreckan Whirlpool.  Please book this boat trip directly with Tony Hill at oban@seafari.co.uk .  Price £50.00 excluding packed lunch which can be arranged directly with the Western Isles Hotel.

7.00 pm Swap stories over a glass of Prosecco in the Lounge before dinner in the dining room.  This will be followed by a celidh in the conservatory.

Sunday 17th October:

A leisurely breakfast in the dining room.  Followed by an informal series of discussions about IKWIG and the legendary film-making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.

Enjoy a coffee and home-made shortbread before heading back to the mainland.   Alternatively, why not extend your stay for a few nights longer – special rates are available (see below).

It promises to be a very entertaining weekend, so do call us if you'd like more information.  For more information about Powell and Pressburger, do check out www.powell-pressburger.org.

Terms and conditions

To confirm a booking, a non-refundable deposit of £100 is required.  No further payment is required until checkout.  We recommend all guests take out insurance.

The Western Isles Hotel, along with Robert Beveridge, will do everything reasonable to ensure that every element of the weekend is delivered.  There may be good reasons why we are unable to deliver everything – island life has plenty of challenges in itself – and appropriate compensation up to £100 per person will be given if any major elements do not happen.  This excludes the Whirlpool trip which is organised separately.

The minimum number of guests for this event to take place is 25.  If the number of confirmed guests on 10th September 2010 is less than this then we reserve the right to cancel the weekend.   We will of course refund any monies given and notify all guests before 15th September 2010. Given the level of interest so far, this is very unlikely.

If you have any comments or suggestions about the weekend, then do make them known to a member of staff at the time.  At all times we will try to rectify a situation there and then.  Alternatively make your views known to Richard Nealon, one of the owners.

If you know where you're going (!), contact us now and reserve your place for what promises to be a very enjoyable event!
